Societal Norms and the Working Woman
The growth of the Indian economy in recent years has been extraordinary but if it is to continue there is a need for more and more women to become part of the skilled workforce. This article considers how car manufacturers such as Jaguar-Land Rover (owned by the Indian conglomerate group Tata), have been trying to recruit more women to work in their manufacturing plants but have faced increasing resistance because of societal-cultural norms that still consider the role of women to be that of home maker and the primary carer of the children.
